‘Revenge’ Review: Doubt

If you’re like me, then you know the wait for a new episode has been too long. The good news is that there are new episodes every week until the season finale. The way everything is played out in “Doubt” shows us we’re in for a real treat.

Revenge 117

The Grayson’s are in damage control mode as they work with attorney Benjamin Brooks (Courtney B. Vance) on Daniel’s (Joshua Bowman) defense. There’s nothing better than a parents love for their child. If your Daniel, this includes getting beat up in jail so you can be released on house arrest. Victoria (Madeleine Stowe) calls on her go to guy, Lee (Derek Ray) to set up the beating. Emily (Emily VanCamp) hasn’t forgotten that Lee is the same guy who beat up Jack (Nick Wechsler). You wouldn’t want to meet a revenge filled Emily in a dark alley as she gives Lee a piece of his own medicine.

Emily suggests bringing Mason Treadwell (Roger Bart) to help guide public perception in Daniel’s favor. Nolan (Gabriel Mann) is on revengenda double time, helping Emily with Treadwell and leading Jack to Canada to follow the fake trail to Amanda (Margarita Levieva).

Victoria is determined for either Amanda or Jack to take the fall for Tyler’s (Ashton Holmes) murder but Emily has other plans and so does Declan (Connor Paolo). In order to help his brother, Declan tells Treadwell about Charlotte’s (Christa B. Allen) drug issue and that she didn’t see anyone on the beach. Treadwell doesn’t play into Victoria’s hands as he refuses to print a retraction. Emily telling Treadwell that Victoria has his interview tapes with David Clarke (James Tupper) might have swayed his decision.

Charlotte might have issues with her mother but in the phone call scene with Declan, she seems like she’s been taking hints in the Victoria school of coldness. Speaking of Victoria, the look between Emily and Victoria after the Treadwill blog post is like a small battle. One of the great things about the show and the cast are some of the subtleties. VanCamp and Stowe play well off each other, even in scenes where all that’s required is just a look.

The introduction of Dominik Wright (James Purefoy) provides a little insight into the Victoria of the past. There have been small references about Victoria’s background but not enough to get a real picture. There’s isn’t a big reveal but it’s an opening to understanding her a bit more and the choices she’s made in the past.

If you haven’t already, check out where the actual blog post mentioned in the episode is online. It is yet unclear if the website will be constantly updated to coincide with the trial storyline.

This week’s questions

  • Once again I wonder where Grandpa Grayson (William Devane) is. To introduce this type of character, only to have him off the canvass when someone like him would be front and center in trying to get Daniel off, seems unbelievable.
  • Is there a possibility that Dominik could be Daniel’s father? This is just me fishing as I don’t think the writers would play this particular card again.
  • When is the next Nolan and Ashley (Ashley Madekwe) scene? Such promise was given when Nolan discovered Ashley was behind the leak of Daniel’s photo.

It was definitely cool seeing James Purefoy on Revenge. He was awesome in Rome, and actually made Ironclad worth watching. Mainly I’m just happy this show is back on and that I got to see it, since I almost missed this episode. An unexpected emergency (fortunately it turned out to be very minor) had me running out of the house immediately before it started. Realizing I hadn’t set a DVR timer I thought for sure I was going to miss it and one of my coworkers at DISH would spoil it for me. But then, after I got back I remembered the Hopper has the PrimeTime Anytime feature. With it enabled it automatically records everything on ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. So I got to see this episode, I’m really happy to have this DVR now.
