“Scandal” sees the repercussions of what happened on the beach at the engagement party for Daniel (Joshua Bowman) and Emily (Emily VanCamp). The episode sees Courtney B. Vance guest star as Daniel’s attorney.
Emily watching another man being arrested at her house while the Grayson’s are on the porch strikes certain similarities to what happened to Emily’s father, David (James Tupper). The only difference is with Victoria (Madeleine Stowe) and Conrad (Henry Czerny) is that instead of just idly standing by, they are actively trying to stop Daniel from being taken away.
Things have just become a little more interesting where Ashley (Ashley Madekwe) is concerned. She’s officially the Grayson’s spokesperson, in regards to Daniel’s arrest. What’s interesting is the opportunistic approach taken. It wasn’t just the initial moment she spoke to the press at the police station but also the fact that she sent the press the picture of Daniel in his bloody suit on the beach. It’s a great opportunity for the character to really get involved in the storyline as oppose to being on the sideline. Now that Nolan (Gabriel Mann) knows what she’s done, it will be interesting to see what he does with the information and if he might use Ashley to help Emily.
Jack (Nick Wechsler) is still trying to protect and also look for Amanda (Margarita Levieva). This can inadvertently get him in trouble as the Grayson’s have set their sight on Amanda being the one to frame Daniel. Declan (Connor Paolo) knows that Jack was on the beach but there’s the issue of what Charlotte (Christa B. Allen) saw. She might not have seen Jack’s face but with the description she gave the cops, Jack keeping his bloody sweater and his connection to Amanda, it could land him in trouble. His only comfort, though unknown, is the fact that Charlotte was possibly high, though I don’t know if Declan would make this information known to the police if they go after Jack.
I wasn’t expecting to see the reveal of what happened on the beach. I thought the writers might have held that piece of information for at least another episode. With there being a wait on the next new episode, a camera shot of just an arm hitting Daniel over the head and then shooting Tyler (Ashton Holmes) twice in the back would have been great. It would have also been infuriating to have to wait so long but the suspense and intrigue would have been worth it.
Satoshi Takeda (Hiroyuki Sanada) has definitely been busy trying to clean up where things have gotten out of control. There are a couple of key moments where I believe Emily is lost in what to do next; her scene with Charlotte on the swing, watching Daniel being removed from court and when Takeda tells Emily she can’t save both Daniel and Jack. This is now where we really see what Emily is made of and what matters more.
A misstep by the writers is that they didn’t include Grandpa Grayson (William Devane) in the episode. For someone that is so protective of the family name to not appear at all, seems unlikely. It’s not just the pride issue but also Daniel’s his grandson and he was at the engagement party so it’s not like he was out of town.
When the announcer said that there were no new episodes until April, I wanted to scream. It’s far too long to wait to see happens next and to answer my next set of questions.
This week’s questions:
- What does Takeda mean when he says Amanda is taken care of?
- Will Nolan tell Emily that Ashley sent the photo to the press?
- Where was Grandpa Grayson while Daniel was being arrested and charged?
- Who will Emily choose to save – Daniel or Jack?
- What will Declan do to protect Jack?
- What will Jack do to protect Amanda?
