It’s very rare that I watch an episode of Revenge and come away feeling a bit disappointed and unfortunately this is one of those times. This isn’t to say that “Perception “ isn’t a good episode but by the show’s own high standards, some of this episode felt a bit off the mark, in comparison.
There is one scene that really stood out and it played out like a soap opera; the truth about David (James Tupper) being Charlotte’s (Christa B. Allen) real father, is revealed in front of everyone at dinner. If that isn’t soap enough for you, William Devane also guest stars as Conrad’s (Henry Czerny) father. I was too young to watch Knots Landing when it aired but based on the few episodes I’ve seen, Devane is great addition to the cast.
In between photo shoots and dinner, Emily (Emily VanCamp) spends most of her time in damage control mode. Jack (Nick Wechsler) has found the video tape of Amanda’s interview and he’s searching for answers. This doesn’t fit into Emily’s plan and she brings Fauxmanda (Margarita Levieva) back into the mix.
What I believe to be interesting is Emily’s decision to not reveal who Charlotte’s real father is. At the beginning of the episode she is adamant about going through with her plan. Watching a touching scene with Conrad and Charlotte changes her mind. The problem is that she’s weaved such a web that even when her initial plan isn’t executed, it still finds a way of happening.
We’re reminded of how sometimes Nolan (Gabriel Mann) gets the best lines as he says the new word of the day – Revengenda. Nolan is one of my favorite characters and you can see sometimes the struggle he has with wanting to help Emily without hurt those that he’s become fond of. His concern for Jack stops him for erasing the tape for Emily; giving Jack a sense of closure. Whether Jack gets the closure he wants, is another question.
I believe that Fauxmanda is even more of loose cannon before. She genuinely cares for Jack and I think she’s tired of having to run and hide things from him. She never likes to be told what to do and I think she might be done with following Emily’s lead.
I can’t help getting the sense that even though Victoria’s (Madeleine Stowe) lie has been revealed, she’s won a different battle. Conrad’s father wants him to relinquish is duties as the head of the company and put Daniel (Joshua Bowman) in charge instead. With ‘Grandpa’ Grayson as the Chairman and head of the family, there’s no doubt he will get his way. I hope that with the writers having Devane play this character, they will fully utilize Devane’s outstanding acting.
Next week is the Fire and Ice engagement party where we come to the point where the pilot started off. The writers have set things up for a truly explosive episode and I hope it doesn’t disappoint. If the promo is anything to go by then it definitely won’t.
This week’s questions
- Is there anything more to Ashley’s (Ashley Madekwe) character and will she do anything other than assist Victoria?
- Is Conrad really still willing to pay for Declan’s (Connor Paolo) education?
- Who took Emily’s box (my money is on Fauxmanda)?
- How will ‘Grandpa’ Grayson factor into Emily’s revengenda?
- Is Daniel really the shooter’s victim?
- Who fires the gun on the beach?
- What will Emily and Victoria do next?
Revenge airs on ABC at 10/9c on Wednesdays
