‘Desperate Housewives’ Review: Always in Control

This week’s episode picks up where the end of last week’s left off; Bree (Marcia Cross), Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) standing over the empty grave site where Gabrielle’s step-father was buried. The situation reminds us of the dynamics of the group; Bree taking charge, even when she would rather not.

Bree finds out that Ben’s (Charles Mesure) construction has been delayed and he reveals that his crew found a dead body. When other attempts fail, Bree confesses that she helped ‘a friend’ bury the body. At first you think Ben might call the police but with the little that we’ve learnt about him, I wasn’t surprised that he did help. What I wasn’t expecting was for Mike (James Denton) to become his ‘cleaner’ and get rid of the body. I wonder if he would have been so compliant if he didn’t know of Susan’s (Teri Hatcher) connection to it. It also makes me wonder what we haven’t been told about Ben and how similar his past might be to Mike.

With the threat of being exposed, Gabrielle rethinks her choice of guardian for her kids Juanita (Madison De La Garza) and, I’ve forgotten her name, Celia (Daniella Baltodano). Bob (Tuc Watkins) and Lee (Kevin Rahm) are the parents of choice (if all four women are incarcerated) but they’re not so keen on the idea. Trust Gabrielle to bribe her children with money and sweets to keep them well-behaved.

Lynette isn’t having a fun time watching Tom’s (Doug Savant) girlfriend Jane (Andrea Parker) bond with Penny (Darcy Rose Byrnes). I had to laugh when Lynette said she doesn’t know how to play dirty. Her emotional manipulation of Penny is reminiscent of some plays she’s pulled throughout the series. They might have been under different circumstances but she said certain things to get her way. Penny not only avoids spending time with Jane, she won’t even spend time Tom. Lynette sees the error of her ways and gets Penny to see Tom. I’m sure this won’t be the end of Lynette’s fight to get Tom back but will she stoop as low as she did or will she play fair.

Susan is still painting without emotion and her teacher Andre (Miguel Ferrer) has had enough. He gives her an A+ but tells her not to return. Her anger towards the other women fuels her anger to finally paint something that isn’t fruit, her son or the skyline. With the painting being of the four women standing over a body, could this be used against them down the line?

The body might have been moved but Susan’s painting could throw a spanner in the works. Now Detective Chuck Vance (Jonathan Cake) is pursuing Alejandro (Tony Plana) as a missing person, he is putting the pressure on Bree. Vance isn’t my favorite character and along with Lynette, they have both annoyed me this season, though I knew he would be back, I still wasn’t pleased by his return.

The end of the episode sees the group fractured as Susan and Lynette are hurt by the things Bree and Gabrielle have been keeping from them. Now we will get to see how they will function with the secret and the extra pressure they’ll get from outside sources.

Desperate Housewives airs on ABC 9/8c on Sundays
